Chapter Two
We awoke the next morning with the cold breeze running in our fur. As I opened my eyes the mist shot into them like icicles. I whimpered. “We need to get inside, it’s so cold.” I was going to wake Showgo up when, “Showgo its time to...” As I turned he was gone. I panicked. “What if he had run away?” I ran to the den as fast as I could. My eyes squinted with all this dampness in the air. “Showgo where are you!” My heart pounded as I yelled, “Showgo!”
Showgo’s body stood out from all the other things in the zone. As he ran through the plains his heart thumped with excitement. “I finally get to go on an adventure, probably should have told Milra, but I just want a look.” As he ran he began to smell a scent. The scent was odd to him. “Maybe it’s the wolves!” He ran even faster, until finally he hit the brambles. He stood at the big hill of them standing right before him. They looked the color of mahogany, with a little bit of mauve color. All of them were in sharp sticks of brambles. As much as he wanted to run through, he went back. Although the night before he was sad, he had many dreams of adventure.
The first one he saw many wolves, from the color white, to the color, black. They held out a paw welcoming him. And whenever he followed them, they would run. He would chase after them with excitement, wanting to see them again. He would run over mountains, valleys’ and rivers. He ran with the firing desire in his heart, to be with them. And through the whole night he just chased. These dreams awoke him, and he wanted to see it for himself, but he would just have to wait a little longer.
“I think we is close.” Said the dark wolf. The other wolf looked at him and snickered. “Very close, lets follow him, and see where he is going.” The other wolf laughed. “Al right, but wes’ must bring back de stone. Weather he dead, or alive.” They made an evil growl. Both wolves nodded, and ran off following Showgo.
I twitched my eyes looking for the black shadow that I have always known. “Curse this mist!” I was frustrated. My eyes watered with all this thickness in the air. “Where could he be? What if he is in danger? Why was I not so careful?” All these thoughts raced through my head. Suddenly, I began to see a dim night shadow. I widened my eyes. It was Showgo. My heart rested for some moments. I ran over to the shadow quickly, not caring how much mist was in the air. As I approached him closer I started to notice his sightless eyes. Then our eyes met each other, and I started to speak. “Showgo don’t scare me like that!” I rubbed my neck against his. He looked down is a sorry way. “I would never leave without saying goodbye.”
I looked up at him. “Well, you’re going to have to say goodbye soon…” His eyes sparkled. “Well let’s just not think about that.” I smiled.
As I stared into the distance I began to see something. My eyes squinted, but as soon as they did, they shot open. Those were no illusions; those were real wolves, walking, towards us. I jumped back quickly. “Showgo we have to go to the den, now!” He looked shocked and confused. “W... why! What is going on?” I growled. “No time! Run!” We both took off like a shooting star. Both our hearts thumped.
When we reached the den we slid on in. As I got in I ran to my nest. I picked up a scarlet, cotton bandana. My body turned almost as fast as I had run. “Showgo you have to leave!” He started to whimper. “Why now, Milra I can’t leave you!” He started to cry, so did I. “There’s no time to argue! You have to listen to me, listen like you never have before.” He stopped crying. He had to realize that this was it; this is where he had to be strong. He had to be brave.
“Ok Milra, I’m ready.” My eyes sparkled. I stared at him for a while. When did he grow to be so strong. I suddenly zoomed in back. It was time, “Showgo, when you go, no one must know you have this stone, no one, do you hear me! There are wolves out there who want this stone so much, they will kill you. That is the only way to take it. So you will wear this, to cover it up. You must never tell anyone about your family, or the stone. You will only say I’m a loner from one of the islands.” I knelt down and put the bandana over his eyes and forehead. “You are going to be the only blind one there, so if they ask, you must show them that you are strong.” Both our eyes watered. I tied a knot in the back with my teeth. Then I stepped back and began to explain what he had to do. “You will go to the first pack, in the south, train theer well, and understand the culture. Then when you are trained, make it look like you have died, and go to the next pack. You will do this until you hit the third pack. I want you to pay close attention, make sure you learn everything. And tell no one who you are!”
Showgo was under a lot of pressure, I could tell, but he took it in. “It will be harder if you make close friends in a pack, so be careful. When you have trained in all the packs, I want you to come back here.”
Showgo’s eyes showed concern. “What about you Milra! What if I die, what if you die! I don’t want to leave you!” My heart beat against me hard. It was like losing a young pup, and making him go to war. I looked out of the den and saw that the wolves were getting closer. “Showgo, there are two wolves out there who have come for the stone, you must leave now!” My breath was hard. We started to whimper loudly. I looked at him straight in the eyes. “You must be strong, you can do anything, ill will be ok.” I smiled and licked his muzzle. “Now you must go, follow the scent of the other pack, go to the edge of the zone, and follow the tunnels south.” I pushed him towards the back of the den door. “You must go now!” He turned around. I can’t leave you! Come with me! They won’t mind you!” He began to cry.
“I can’t Showgo, I’m sorry, they know me too much, you will be fine.” He whimpered and licked my muzzle. “Good bye Milra, I love you.” I rubbed my neck against his, and licked him. “Good bye Showgo, I love you too.” He turned around, and ran into the mist, like a broken heart, finding a source. That was the last time I ever saw him, alive, that is. I looked at the ground and saw red liquid fall to the ground. I was crying blood. “Crimson Tears.” I thought. “Just like what she said. And now it’s my turn, to help my grandson.” I ran outside and stood waiting for the wolves. I was not afraid. My whole life flashed in front of me. My family, my friends, Rose, Showgo, the Forbidden Zone, all of it. Right before my eyes. And I realized, I have lives a life no other wolf will ever live. And I was proud of it.
As the wolves approached me they laughed a vile sound. Like a vicious hyena. And before I knew it, they were right in front of me. “Well, if it isn’t little Milra, you have grown, traitor.” Said the big black wolf. I growled. I am not a traitor, your leader on the other hand, maybe.” The smaller grey wolf growled. “I no think are leader will like dat. He be very angry, you know. It no good to talk about he dat way.” They circled around me. But I was not afraid. “Well you can tell your little leader that he has a sick mind.” They growled at me. Enough talk, where’s the stone?!” I stared at him strait in the eye, “Why should I tell you.” “We know dat chu have it, now hand et ova!” Said the grey wolf. I growled in their faces. “Never.” They were done with me. “That’s it you little swine!” The bigger wolf clawed on my back. I growled and quickly turned over. They both continued to attack me. I knew they would not kill me, they would take me in and beat me until I told them where the stone was. I had to run. As the next wolf jumped, I ran under him, and shot off. They growled loud, and made a furious bark.
“Get her!” They ran after me, faster than I could go. My bones were weak, and I was bleeding badly. I was out of hope, and if they took me, sooner or later they would find out that the child has the stone. I had to act fast. And then, there it was, the high bluff. The bluff was a tall precipice that fell for a long time, until it hits the ocean. I knew what I had to do. I had, to jump. It was the only way, and I had to protect Showgo. The ancient legend, says that if there is an important reason, you could Hakun a loved one, until they were satisfied. This means that if I died, I could ask the great Sky Pack if I could Hakun Showgo. A Hakun is an indivisible angel that watches over a loved one. And guides them on their journey. Although he may not see me, I could watch over him. And this was indeed, of what I did.
I stood at the bluff, looking down at the young ocean. I heard the waves bang against the rock, and I could hear them dodging the rocks in their way. As I stared into the mist my heart thumped. I lifted one paw, then the other. As I tipped I could hear the wolves saying, “What is she doing! Hurry!” But they were too late. They saw my body fall over like a stone that was about to crumble. As I fell I prayed that I would Hakun Showgo. Everything was so fast, mist running through my fur. The red tears floating up. And suddenly, it went white.
I found myself lying there, surrounded, by moving clouds, and the mist, was no longer there. I opened my eyes, to see that they were pure blue. And my fur was a pale, crystal, white aroma.
All of the sudden, I saw a golden wolf walk towards me. It must have been the great sky pack leader. As a padded up to him, I began to speak, but he spoke before I did. “Welcome to the great sky pack. You are forever more here to live.” I looked at him in a nervous way. “But that’s just it; I need to protect one of my loved ones. And if you would please I would love to Hakun my grandchild, until his soul is satisfied.” He looked at me in a shocked way. As if it was a new word to him. “Hakun?” He laughed so loud, that the mountains might have shook, and fallen down. “I have never been asked that in years. Who is your grandchild?” I stood up in a strong way. “He is Showgo, the one to for fill the prophecy.” The ancient wolf became serious. “Are you sure you want to do this? It will mean you are dedicated to this until he is through.” I nodded showing him I was serious. He started to speak the ancient verse.
“May the great gods protect this past life wolf, and guide whom to be a Hakun. And may one have the wings to fly over all obstacles. I call all the spirits around this wolf, to hold whom, and protect, like a cradle in the sun. I call the angels, to give wisdom, and hope. And I call the dead, to show the way. I grant this wolf to be a Hakun, until one is satisfied!”
The clouds began to rush around me, and I began to glow. I felt power, rush through my fur, I could was happening. One wing, bright white, as the clouds, popped out on my side. Then another popped out. The wings were feathery, and angel like. Before I knew it, I was a Hakun.
I started to fall in to nothing, well maybe the sky, it was so blank. I heard the sky pack yelling at me “Good luck!” I would have answered, but I was falling into a deep abyss. I started to scream, I was scared. But soon, my wings shot out like a marvelous light, and I soared through the sky.
I flew for some time, looking for the dark shadow, running through the forest. I soon found him and flew down to him. Everything was going through me, what had happened, why I was here, how I died, everything. All these things made me realize, I was a wolf, living in my world. And that would never change. “May the great Sky Pack protect our souls!” I flew down as fast as lightning, and began, a new life, as a Hakun.
We awoke the next morning with the cold breeze running in our fur. As I opened my eyes the mist shot into them like icicles.
